NAFOL profile: Lena Dahl

Lena DahlI am educated assistant professor in outdoor education from the University College of Telemark, Bø. I also have the highest competence in mountain sports through qualifications through Norsk Fjellsportforum og Norske Tindevegledere. Issues concerning safety in outdoor activities have always been my big interest, and this lead to my PhD application in 2011 at HiSF. My application topic was about safety issues and teaching in outdoors activities in secondary school. There has been a lot of research on safety issues in various fields in the Norwegian society, but until now there has been very little research on safety issues in outdoor education in secondary school.  I hope that my research can contribute to an overview of accidents and near misses in the outdoor education in secondary school, and, at the same time, can contribute to a deeper understanding of how the safety issues are handled in the outdoor education. At the same time, I also want to see these issues in a broader perspective. Therefore, the project will focus on safety culture in the school organization together with issues connected to organizational leadership and the teacher’s safety issues through their teaching. This way I want to make a holistic project that in time will bring interesting findings to the field of outdoor education.
