Design literacy for sustainable design
In my doctoral project I examine the design literacy pupils develop through design education in the school subject Art and Crafts in primary education on the topic of products life cycles, their consequences for a sustainable development, environment and value increment, and on how sustainable design can contribute to a sustainable development.
Trough giving lessons on the topic of sustainable design at the Teacher training in Art and Design, I have experienced that this is a complex educational topic. Since this subject also is relatively new in the curriculum of Arts and Crafts in primary school, I would like to examine how it is implemented, and what the pupils gain from participating in these classes.
My PhD-project is part of the research project Design Literacy – from primary education to university level, where the contents of, and relationship between, design education in different educational levels are examined and problematized, with the goal of strengthening this education at all levels.
I am a doctoral candidate at the Department of Art, Design and Drama, the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design, at the Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA), and follow the PhD program in Educational Science for Teacher Education of the Faculty of Education and International Studies, also at HiOA. Through additional courses and participation in the NAFOLs program, I hope to be able to build the skills to develop and implement this project in a professional and thorough manner.
